There are so many options for choosing a litter box but there are some considerations to make when choosing one for a small apartment. In this post, I’ll discuss how to choose the best litter box for a small apartment.

Living in a small apartment ourselves, we make a lot of considerations for almost every purchase we make.

A litter box is no different. We not only want our litter box to work well for our space but also be large enough and sufficient for our cat.

That being said, let’s explore some great litter box options for a small living space.

Pick the Best Litter Box for a Small Apartment

When you’re in a small living space, choosing a litter box will consist of making a few considerations.

First, you’ll need to decide where you want to put the litter box. Depending on the layout of your apartment, you have some options such as a bathroom, bedroom, or living room.

Another consideration is how the litter box will look. Will it blend in like a piece of furniture, will it have a lid?, etc.

You’ll also need to think about the size of the box. How large is your cat? Do you have multiple cats?

Which Room Do You Want to Put the Litter Box?

Are you having trouble deciding where to put a litter box in a small apartment? We did also but it wasn’t long to figure out the best place for our living space.

We decided on our bedroom. We spend most of our time in the living room and kitchen. Therefore, the litter box is out of the way for us.

It was also important that our litter box had a lid. A lid reduces mess as well as smell. I make a point to clean the litter box twice a day to help keep everything tidy for us and our cat.

Another option is to place your litter box in your living room. I would still recommend a litter box with a lid.

However, placing in your living room provides you with another option of choosing a litter box that looks like a piece of furniture.

You may have to do a bit of trial-and-error in your space. The good thing is that you have plenty of options.

Hidden Litter Boxes

There are some great furniture pieces that enclose a litter box. These pieces blend well with all of the other furniture in your home.

Decorative Cat House & Side Table

They are available in a variety of sizes, colors, and materials. This makes blending your litter box into a small space easy.

Not only is the enclosure hiding the litter box but it can be functional as well, serving as another sitting area or side table.

The enclosure can also help to prevent strong odors. Consistent cleaning can reduce odors even more.

These hidden litter box options are a great solution for a living room, bedroom, and even a bathroom.

Litter Boxes with Lids

Choosing a litter box with a lid is a solution for any room. The only issue is that you may not want a litter box sitting in your living room which is understandable.

If you have the room to place a lidded box in you bedroom, I think that is a better option versus the living room.

There are a lot of options for litter boxes with lids. I do recommend finding the type that have a flip lid so that you don’t have to remove the entire lid each time you clean the litter.

A flip lid litter box is definitely saving me time during my day. Before, I would have to pop the entire lid off and on to clean.

Now I can flip the lid, clean, and be done. It is worth buying one of these if you decide on getting a litter box with a lid.

Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes

Another option is to invest in a self-cleaning litter box. These are a bit more expensive but could be well worth it if you don’t want to spend so much time cleaning the litter.

I’ve never used a self-cleaning litter box but I’m sure they are helpful for many people. Especially if you have back problems and don’t want to have to bend twice a day to clean.

Before buying one of these, I recommend reading the reviews on the various models. Sometimes reading the negative reviews can save you from buying one that won’t work well in your space.

If you buy one with a lid, these self-cleaning litter boxes may do well in any room of your apartment.

Overall Tidiness with a Litter Box

No matter what type of litter box you get and where you decide to put it, tidiness will be key in reducing odor and the overall happiness of your cat.

I clean and vacuum up each time I clean the litter box. I clean our cat’s litter box twice a day.

We’ve had no issue with odors and it keeps the litter area tidy for all of us. A handheld vacuum can make cleaning efficient as well.

Closing Thoughts On Choosing the Best Litter Box for a Small Apartment

In closing, I feel that a litter box with a lid is the best overall option no matter where you plan to place it.

If your space is limited and you must put your litter box in the living room, consider an enclosure that also looks like a piece of furniture.

A self-cleaning litter box can also work well in a living room if it has a lid. Everyone’s living space is different so it may require some trial-and-error.

Think about the size of the litter box (including the lid) if you want to place it in your bathroom.

Most small apartments have tiny bathrooms and placing anything extra in them can take up a lot of space.

I hope this post has provided you with some great ideas and options for choosing the best litter box for a small apartment.
