Doing exercise in a small apartment is not impossible. You don’t need as much room as you may think to get in a good workout. You may be wondering what is the best workout equipment for a small apartment.
As long as you have a small amount of room, you can get a full body workout with zero equipment. However, there are those that need to or want to use specific exercise equipment.
Unfortunately, you can’t fit a lot of equipment in a small apartment. Below, I highlight some great options for exercise equipment that can fit nicely into any small space.

Best Workout Equipment for a Small Apartment
The great thing about some exercise equipment is that they are small enough to work in any small living space. Even a small apartment can have a nice home gym depending on your square footage.
Our one bedroom space holds some basics like dumbbells, exercise ball, exercise bands, and even a rowing machine that folds up out of the way.
As long as you can stay organized, there is no reason that you cannot have a small home gym that is sufficient for a complete workout even in a tiny space.
Dumbbells / Barbell
A dumbbell set is a staple in any home gym and they work in a small living space too. There are some great options today in terms of the type of dumbbells you can get.
You know longer have to order dumbbells in various weights. There are now adjustable dumbbell sets that also convert into a barbell as well.
This is great for various weight lifting exercises without having a ton of bulky pieces.
Space Saving Foldable Treadmills
There are some really great options for treadmills that fit into smaller living spaces. Many of them fold up and out of the way.
Most can store away under a bed or in a closet. This is great news if you like to walk or run for exercise. You can have the convenience of a treadmill when you can’t get outdoors.
These space saving treadmills are ideal for a one or two bedroom apartment.
Small Elliptical Machine
The elliptical machine has been one of my favorite pieces of workout machines besides the treadmill. Like most space saving treadmills, there are also space saving elliptical machines.
I’ve always liked ellipticals because they are low impact and easy on the joints. You can burn a lot of calories and move your entire body in the process.
Most of these space saving elliptical machines won’t have all of the bells & whistles that the larger models have. However, what you sacrifice in touchscreens, you gain in compact design.
Don’t underestimate the functionality of a workout bench. You can perform a number of exercises with one of these and they are compact enough to fit in a small apartment.
Many of the exercises you do will require free weights such as dumbbells. You can do bicep curls, chest presses, and shoulder presses.
You can even use the bench itself to do sit-ups or tricep dips. Having one of these benches is worth if if you have the room for one.
I like having a kettlebell as part of our little home gym. We only have one which is perfect for our space. Kettlebell exercises are a great addition to a workout.
Like dumbbells, they can take up space if you want to have various sizes. Fortunately, there are adjustable kettlebells that work similarly to adjustable dumbbells.
You can have one kettlebell that can be adjusted to different weight sizes. For example, Bowflex has an adjustable kettle bell that can change resistance from 8 pounds up to 40 pounds with a turn of the dial.
If you want compact and convenient resistance exercise, exercise bands are a standard goto. They can be taken anywhere so they are great for travel.
You can fold them up and store them in a drawer or bin. They also come in various resistance options. Best of all, they are one of the lowest-cost pieces of exercise equipment that you can buy.
I think all home gyms no matter the size of living space should include resistance bands.
Cardio Ideas for a Small Apartment
I once heard Navy SEAL David Goggins say, “if you have a floor, you can workout” (paraphrasing).
This is so true. You can accomplish a full-body workout anytime in a small apartment with zero equipment.
Whether you want to do a cardio workout or a resistance training workout. All that you need is your own bodyweight.
I turn to YouTube for a lot of the workouts I do with no equipment. There are TONS of fitness videos you can follow. Here are some great options below.
Want to hit your step goal? There are plenty of walking videos that you can follow. Some of them will even help you hit the 10K step goal many people have using their FitBit watches.
Here is one of my favorite goto walking workouts:
HASfit is a great fitness channel with workouts for all fitness levels. They have workouts with no equipment or with. I really enjoy their positive energy and the variety of workouts they offer.
Doing calisthenics is one of my favorite ways to get in a full body workout with no equipment. You can do calisthenics in your apartment with very little space.
Don’t let a small apartment keep you from having an awesome home gym. The equipment recommendations above offer a great starting point but there are plenty of other options you can research.
Stay organized and you can have some great pieces of exercise equipment in your small space without anyone ever knowing that you do.
Consider space saving equipment like a treadmill that can fold and store away under a bed. Use adjustable free wights to save space such as adjustable dumbbells or kettlebells.
Invest in an adjustable workout bunch to add more exercise routines using free weights and your own body weight.
