Deciding where to put a desk in a small apartment is a challenge because you only have so much space to work with.

When we moved into our one-bedroom apartment, deciding where to place the desk was fairly easy.

Placing our small desk in the bedroom worked out best for us. We could have made it work in the living room as well but it would have been too much of a distraction to try and work in the living area as that is where the TV is located.

In this post, I will talk about where you can put a desk in a small apartment as well as the types of desks that you can consider buying if you don’t have one already.

Ideas for Where to Put a Desk in a Small Apartment

Depending on how much square footage you are working with will determine the best place to put a small desk.

If you are in a studio apartment, you will likely have to choose a very small desk or sacrifice space for a mid-sized desk if that is where you plan on spending most of your time.

A one-bedroom apartment offers another option as you can make space in your bedroom if it is large enough.

The way we made room in our bedroom for a small desk was to catty-corner our bed. Catty-cornering in our bed actually freed up more room to not only place a desk but to also move around more freely.

Another option is to place your desk in your living room. For example, our living room is actually a nice size for this small apartment.

If I really wanted the desk to be in the living room, it would just be a matter of maneuvering the furniture around to accommodate it.

I think a corner desk would be ideal if you want to place a desk in a living room.

Types of Desks

One thing that helps for sure is having a variety of desk options to choose from. Now if you already have a desk, then how you choose to place it is going to be determined by what room you have in your apartment.

If you haven’t for a desk yet or you want to change the desk you have then you have some great options to choose from.

Some desk options that you can choose from can include corner desks, minimalist desks, and standing desks.

Corner Desks

A corner desk is typically shaped like an L. this makes it easy to place this type of desk in any corner of any room in your apartment.

The benefit of a corner desk is that you don’t really have to think too much about where to put it because it’s going to take up little space in comparison to the standard size desk.

What is also nice about a corner desk is that the L shape gives you more room to work with than a regular rectangular desk.

Minimalist Desks

When you think simple then you are thinking of a minimalist desk. These desks look just the way you would imagine.

They usually consist of just a small rectangular desktop and not much else. Don’t expect these types of desks to have drawers or any other type of storage space.

A minimalist desk can work well in any small living space. They don’t require much space and all that you need is a simple chair to complete your workspace.

Another nice thing about these types of death is that they are relatively inexpensive. They range anywhere from $50 to $70 for a standard minimalist desk.

Standing Desks

If you prefer to use a standing desk, you’ll be glad to know that these desks are similar to the minimalist desk except for the fact that you can adjust the height.

These desks will cost a little bit more because they raise and lower electronically. However, they are a great option if you prefer to stand for part of the time that you are working at your desk.

A standing desk takes up very little room and can be easily placed in any section of your apartment.

Besides a corner desk, a standing desk would work really well in a living room space also. The cool thing is that you wouldn’t necessarily need to keep a chair with your standing desk.

That would make even less of a space issue if you want to put your desk someplace other than a bedroom.

Folding Desk

If you are really struggling with space issues, a folding table desk could be the next best solution for you.

It may be more of a hassle to have to fold your desk away each time you’re done using it. However, if your main computer is just a laptop, it may work out better than you think.

There are some really cool options when it comes to foldable desks. Some of them are Compact and can fold away in a matter of seconds.

Another awesome thing about a folding desk is that you can move it from room to room without dedicating anyone space for a permanent desk.

For example, the Cooper Desk Pro can fold and you can adjust the height and tilt of the desk as well.

Think Minimalist

when you are living in a small apartment or small living space in general, you really have to change your mindset to think like a minimalist.

I am not 100% minimalist. however, I do make a point to try and live as simply as possible with s few things as possible.

Minimalism definitely has its place when you are living in a small apartment. In my opinion, the less you have the more freeing it feels in your space.

Every now and again, we do realize that some things have started to clutter up our space. We make a point to purge items that we haven’t touched in 6 months or more.

I think it is a good idea to have a minimalist mindset when choosing a desk for your apartment.

Closing Thoughts

There are some great desk options for small apartments. These options make it easier to decide where to put a desk in your small living space.

Corner desks are great for a larger room in your apartment. Minimalist deks and stand-up desks can work in a bedroom or living room.

Portable folding desks take up no space at all and can be moved from room to room. Using a bit of creativity with your current furniture, you can create a comfortable workspace with your desk.
