Figuring out where and how to store dirty laundry in a small apartment is challenging depending on the layout of your space.

Dirty laundry can pile up quickly so you don’t want it piling up in a location that is out in the open.

We have had our own challenges with keeping our dirty laundry in order in our one-bedroom apartment.

Keep reading below to find out some options for keeping your dirty clothes out of the way until you’re ready to wash them.

How to Store Dirty Laundry in a Small Apartment

Living in a small apartment ourselves, we have had to come up with creative ways to make the best use of our living space.

We have a small one bedroom apartment and very little storage space. Fortunately, the closet in our bedroom is mid-sized.

I’ll share how we store our laundry as well as another option if you have very little space.

Using Laundry Hampers to Stay Organized

The key to handling your dirty clothes is to stay as organized as you can. One way to accomplish this is to organize your clothes using laundry hampers.

We use three laundry hampers in our closet. One is for whites, another for colors, and the last one for linens.

These laundry hampers are compact and are foldable for quick storage (even though we never fold them.) The closet is a great option for us because of its size.

Plus we keep all of our clothes in this closet so it all works out. However, if you do not have ample space in a closet for these hampers, consider the next larger space you have.

If it is your bedroom, it is still doable to have three hampers. You’ll have to make a point to keep your laundry from piling up if this is the case.

Placing hampers in a closet is a bit more forgiving if your laundry piles up. You can always close your closet door until you can wash your clothes.

Laundry Hamper Options for Small Spaces

You would probably be surprised at the types of laundry hampers that are available for small spaces.

Some of them that you can consider include:

  • Corner hampers
  • Wall-mounted hampers
  • Tilt-out hampers
  • Over-the-door hanging hampers

Corner Hampers

These corner hampers are shaped to fit into any corner of a room. You may be able to get away with just one of these if you live alone. Otherwise, it would be good to invest in two or three of them and place them in different corners.

Wall-Mounted Hampers

These hampers work just as you suspect. They are hung on a wall so it helps to keep your laundry off the floor and out of the way.

A wall-mounted hamper cannot hold a lot of dirty laundry so you’ll likely need a few of these to help keep your dirty laundry in order.

Tilt-Out Hampers

These types of tilt-out hampers are built into some type of frame and can be pulled out at an angle to place laundry in. Depending on your living space, you may only want a couple of these if you like these models.

Over-the-Door Hanging Hampers

If you want convenience without having to mount a hamper on a wall, these over-the-door hampers are easy to install.

You can easily hang one of these over a closet door or bathroom door. I think two of these would work well for one to two people in a small apartment.

If you are single, one of these options may suffice. For more than one person in an apartment, you’ll likely need to use a variety of these types of hampers to keep laundry from piling up.

The nice thing about these options is that they are out of the way.

Use Storage Bins That Fit Under Your Bed

Another option is to use flat storage bins that fit under the bed. You can use three of these bins and separate your clothes between them.

Since the bins slide under the bed, it makes it really easy to keep your laundry out of the way. You may not be able to store as much laundry as you like so it will require you to wash more often.

One way to mitigate that is to invest in a portable washing machine.

Consider Using a Portable Washing Machine

Chances are your apartment complex has a laundry room or it may not. Either way, sharing a laundry room or using a laundromat is a hassle.

Our laundry room is always busy. What makes it more difficult is that there are usually more than one washer and dryer that are out of order.

Then we are competing for the machines that do work. Going to a laundromat is even more inconvenient.

That is why we invested in a portable washing machine. It is one of the best appliances we’ve bought. These machines are compact and get the job done.

We have to do smaller loads but it keeps our laundry from piling up. Plus, we save money and we don’t have to share the washers and dryers with other tenants.

There were many times I’ve gone to do laundry and found that someone washed something that left a ton of grease in the washing machines.

You just never know what people are washing and then you have to use the same machines afterwards.

Our portable washing machine washes and has a spinner attached to spin dry the clothes.

The spinner dries the clothes well enough that we are able to hang dry our clothes on a drying rack.

These portable washers don’t require any special hook-ups. There is some manual work involved as you have to fill the wash tub and drain the water after each wash.

However, it does save a ton of time and your dirty laundry won’t pile up on you if you stay consistent with washing.

Closing Thoughts On How to Store Dirty Laundry

It takes a bit more work to keep dirty laundry from piling up on you. A bit of creativity with storage and staying on top of washing can keep your laundry at bay.

Fortunately, there are a variety of hamper options to choose from that are compact and convenient for small spaces.

You can help streamline your laundry process by investing in a portable washing machine. These machines enable you to wash at your convenience.

They are ideal for small apartment living and can save you the time and hassle of sharing an apartment complex laundry room or going to the laundromat.

There are some creative ways to store dirty laundry to include corner hampers, wall-mounted hampers, and more.
